Read Matthew 6:1-4
1 "Be careful not to do your 'acts of righteousness' in front of others, to be seen by them. If you do, you will
have no reward from your Father in heaven.
2 "So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues
and on the streets, to be honored by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 3 But when
you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4 so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward
you.
Reflect Remember on Monday, we talked about caring for others
because we owe it to them? Our motivation in loving our neighbors
should be that Jesus commanded us to, and that by keeping His
commands, we honor God. Our motivation should be honoring God, not
making ourselves look good.
I live on a rural road. Last winter on several occasions, when the snow
plow came by, it completely wiped out my mailbox and my neighbor’s.
Because of our differing work schedules, I was always able to get out
there to survey the damage before he was. I’d have both mailboxes fixed
before he got home from work. He never knew who did it.
It was really cool to have the opportunity to share the love of God this
way. It feels good to make somebody’s life easier. It feels good to make
somebody happy. I wasn’t doing it for recognition. I wasn’t doing it so
he’d owe me a favor. In fact, I didn’t want him to know it was me. This is
going to sound weird, but it was fun that he didn’t know who did it!
He actually caught me the last time (which is why I can write about
this). He said that the previous time the mailbox had been knocked down,
he and his wife and son were all in bed with the flu for a week. He was
dreading having to go out in the cold to fix the mailbox. He said he
couldn’t believe it when he looked out and the mailbox was back on its
post!
Respond Start looking for some ways that you can help others through
random acts of kindness. Pray that you will recognize these opportunities
as they present themselves.
